The man cave

Greg was outside cleaning up our yard today. He came in and said something about us sitting in the shed to be a bit warmer during this Fall. I admit i didn't really pay much attention after all its a small shed and we are 2 people.

I went outside to see what he was doing and to let him know that dinner was in the oven. He has set up a man cave in the shed. This is not expected to last long and then he will move his cave inside to the spare room.

Thrifty Fire starters

Ingrediants:
Wax
Burning item – sawdust or crayon wrappers
Old metal coffee can – remove any wrappers
Egg carton – either paper or foam. I prefer the paper cartons - save the Earth and all.

Steps
Gather your wax. I use old candles, broken crayons, paraffin wax - any wax, any color. This is the time to save up your candle stubs, the lasting wax from canister candles. I even will use those bummer candles that you buy and they won’t burn. As you collect wax you can hold it in the melting can.

Put the wax into the coffee can.

Place on burner – use a heat high enough to melt the wax but not to burn it. I used a medium heat today. Watch how high your heat is until you get a layer of melted wax in the bottom of the can.

Meanwhile place your burning item in the cups of the egg carton. The only items I have used and will suggest are sawdust or the crayon wrappers. Whichever you use fill the cups about ¾ full.

Once you get about ½ can of melted wax you can pour it carefully in the carton cups. Fill them to the top but don’t spill over and waste your wax.

Leave the cartons sit and cool. They need to sit for at least 24 hours before you use them.
When your ready to use them; For the foam cartons just pop out the starter DO NOT BURN THE EGG CARTON!!!!
For the paper cartons (and one of the reasons I prefer them) just cut a starter, carton and all, place in fire with kindling and light. Stack wood on top and light. Easy fire, nice way to spend an evening with your loved ones.

Recipe review - Sweet & Sour pork chops

Reader’s Digest - Like Grandma Used To Make

Ingredients
4 boneless pork loin chops
2 medium carrots, sliced
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
4 lemon slices
2/3 cup apple juice
3 Tbsp packed light brown sugar
3 Tbsp vinegar
1 clove garlic, minced
½ tsp ground ginger
¼ tsp each salt & black pepper
3 Tbsp cold water
4 tsp cornstarch

Directions:
#1. Coat 10 inch skillet with cooking spray. Heat skillet over medium heat. Add pork chops and cook for 3 minutes on each side or until brown.

#2. Add carrots, onion and lemon slices. In a small bowl, combine apple juice, brown sugar, vinegar, garlic, salt & pepper. Pour over the pork chops and vegetables.

#3. Bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer, covered for 5 minutes or until chops are no longer pink. Transfer chops and lemon slices to a platter, cover and keep warm.

#4. In a small bowl, combine water and cornstarch, then stir into the apple mixture. Cook for 2 minutes or until the mix is thick. Spoon over chops. Serve with rice or noodles. Makes 4 servings.

Results - another great meal from this cookbook. I did use Leeks instead of the onion but I think it does need the stronger onion flavor.

Now the scope on this stuff it is all natural, 95% organic (yeah) and I received the fresh mint flavor. Really nice smooth, fun globe shape and yummy mint!!!

Recipe review - 20 minute meatball stew

I started a challenge with myself based on the Julie/Julia movie. Sorry but I was not going to buy a Julia Child cookbook so I used one that my Mom's best friend gave her the last Christmas she was alive. Greg & I are having fun with this common sense, really good food cookbook.

From Reader’s digest cookbook “Like grandma Used To Make

1 can (11 ½ oz) hot style vegetable juice cocktail
3 Tbsp flour
1 can (29 oz) mixed vegetables (the book says large cut), drained
2 ½ cups lower-sodium beef broth
1 can (14.5 oz) low sodium stewed tomatoes, undrained and cut up
½ tsp dried oregano
8 oz ground beef
2 Tbsp bread crumbs (either plain or seasoned)
2 Tbsp milk
1/8 tsp garlic salt
1 large egg white

Directions:
Combine juice cocktail, flour, vegetables, broth, tomatoes and oregano. Bring to boil over high heat.

Meanwhile in small bowl combine ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, garlic salt and egg white.

Drop the meat mixture from a small spoon into the boiling stew. Lower the heat and allow to simmer until the meatballs are no longer pink. Stir occasionally, Serves 4

Decision – YUMMY!!!!! This is a great rib sticking meal that will make a repeat appearance. I served with multi-grain French bread but any soft crust bread would be great.
Changes – instead of using the canned vegetables you could customize it with your favorite mix of vegetables. I added Lima beans and wax beans. I did not use the milk in the meat mixture and had to add approx 2 more tbsp of bread crumbs. Next time I will add a splash or 2 of hot sauce to the meatballs – they tasted flat.

Product review - Kashi Honey Sunshine

Kashi has once again come up with a delicious cereal. The big good point for this is 22% of your daily fiber. Better yet these little bundles of goodness are very good even when eaten without milk.

I got my box free thanks to VocalPoint but I did also receive coupons to share for $1.50 off a box.

Great shopping deals today at Kroger

I finally got in to do the Buy 10 get $5 off deals I highlighted last week. I did make a slight change what I bought was
8 Kraft Mac & cheese cups
2 Kraft singles
total $11.98 – $3.20 in manufacturer coupons - $5 for the deal = $3.78 for all 10 items.

I also picked up 4 Sauve hair care items (2 shampoo & 2 conditioner)
4 @ $1.28 each = $5.12 - $2 off 3 Kroger coupon = 4/$3.12. I’ll sell these at my next yard sale for $1 each. Sauve sells very well here at my yard sales except that everything has to be matching scents – no big deal. Also notice that 2 of them are the bonus 33% free sizes.

I also found a Softsoap Essentials refill bottle in the markdown bin for $1.19 and it created a $2 ONYSO Catalina. Even though we don’t have a base unit we will dump the soap into the current bottle when it is needed.

First Day of Fall 2009

You know how on Food network they talk about needing Smell-O-Vision? Well today I need Sound-O-Vision. I was sitting outside enjoying my background, the sights, the sounds and the smells.

Sounds include crickets, the birds chirping (and hoping they don’t make a deposit on me). The kids playing throughout the mobile home park. The train’s (1/2 mile to the South) and the locusts. If you go buy the old wives tale once they start 6 weeks until the first frost, we have about 2 weeks. Funny the chief weatherman today mentioned that we could have frost coming towards beginning part of next week.

The sights include the cornfield waiting for harvest (its animal feed). Various weeds showing off pretty flowers.
Nice red apples on the ground and in the tree.
And the Maple tree that is just starting to change – look real close and you can see the red in the leaves.
My Marigolds now look so bright and cheery against the dirt of an empty garden.

The various animals are preparing for winter. Momma groundhog was just out eating her juicy weeds. The squirrels are running around collecting goodies and taking bites out of the apples. The stray cats are also getting fat (and not with babies).

Dinner tonight/Taco soup

It has been cooler so I decided to make Taco Soup for dinner. This is a recipe that I found online but of course I had to make some changes.

Ingrediants
1 pound ground beef (I used 80/20) but use whatever meat you wish
15 oz can of corn kernels, undrained
15 oz cans of tomatoes, I used some fresh cooked 2 cans worth
15 oz tomato sauce (didn’t use I used the fresh cooked tomatoes)
15 oz can of kidney beans, drained but it calls for undrained
15 oz can of refried beans
2 packets of taco seasoning (I used one low sodium and 1 cheesy)
1 onion, calls for a large onion add what you want based on your taste
1 small red spicy pepper, chopped Recipe calls for 1 – 4oz can green chilis

Directions:
Brown the ground meat, drain if you have too much fat
Add all ingredients
Heat

I topped mine with shredded cheese, chopped lettuce and a dollop of sour cream. Serve taco type chips I drained my kidney beans I don’t like that yucky oil/juice that they come in. Nice thing about this is that it can sit for hours so it makes a great tailgate party dish!!!

Pickles

What do you get when you combine cucumbers, pickling salt, vinegar, dill seed, dill frons, garlic and water? PICKLES!!!! My first attempt at making pickles and as you can see I made way to many for the jars that I had. I thought I had quart jars but when I checked I did not so I used 10 half pint and 3 other larger containers. And I still have 10 cucumbers left to make pickle relish with.
Oh how do they taste??? Of course I had to check them and even though we can’t et them for 8 weeks they are great. One container will not make it the 8 weeks I keep stealing from it.

Walgreen's trip 9/18/2009

Just a quick trip really only 20 minutes.

2 neopsporin used the $2 Walgreen's coupon and 2 50 cent manufacturer coupons received $3 register reward = 2 cent profit!!! Greg was very happy to see them and he is such fun to play the "guess who much I paid" price game.

2 oz Hand sanitizer (for our upcoming trip to TX)

1 box of Kleenix

1 bottle of Listerine no coupons but did get a $2 RR = paid 98 cents. Again Greg is happy he likes to use it and I only buy it when its cheap a bottle of peroxide only costs 50 cents.

1 food storage container on clearance for $1.98!!! I needed one to fit in my frig for the pickles.
AAA batteries for Greg's razor

Long envelopes for the wedding invitations.

Box of dried apricots and box of raisins (need for otameal cookie bars)

All this for $15.02 and I got back $5 in rr so a total of $10.02.

And one raincheck for True North nut clusters for free (due to rr deal)

Trip to the Farmers Market

Greg & I got a extra treat today. One of our neighbors went to the Farmer's market and gave us a ride. We didn't need much but I wanted some pickling cucumbers. Got them and 11 of the largest green peppers that I think I have ever seen. So I plan on making some stuffed peppers for Greg and the rest will get chopped and put in the freezer for cooking. I paid what I think are some good prices $7 for the peck of cucumbers and $2 for the peppers.

September 11, 2001 – The day we should never forget

I think that September 11, 2001 will be similar to the day that JFK died. We will remember where we were, what happened and how we reacted.

I lived in Baltimore Maryland at the time. I was at work and had just started what was usually a very long 10 hour day of phone calls. Our call volume was lower than normal. I actually was doing work that I usually do on Sundays, fixing problem orders. Honestly it was the best part of my job – I really did (and still do) hate talking on the phone.

We heard the news from one of the incoming calls. The caller asked if we were watching the news and filled us in on a small part of what was going on. At the same time I was calling a customer in New York City – I got a recording that said “due to a natural disaster all incoming lines were down.” When I stood up to tell my Supervisor I heard the reports from other operators. There was commotion as fellow employees looked for a TV or radio – something to give us details. A short time later it was my break time (between 9:30 and 10 am) so I took the opportunity to call home. At that time the 2 planes had crashed into WTC. And the third had just hit the Pentagon. I stayed on the phone as long as I could to get as many details as I could get. My mom called me back when the South tower fell.

We were scared here we are working 15 miles from Aberdeen Proving Ground and hearing rumors of evacuations there. For me it was terrifying here I am 30 miles from home with my son at school 5 miles from Downtown Baltimore. I had to get home to be with him – no way was anything going to happen and me not be with him. The management allowed (like they had a choice) those of us that felt we had to leave to go. A friend gave me a ride home.

We spent the afternoon watching the news. Watching and praying that people could/would survive toe collapse of the twin towers. That they could survive the plane crashes at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. Our family could not reach us by phone until around 6:30 pm.

That day life changed for each of us.
Today as we remember the events and those that lost their lives let us give thanks for their bravery and innocence.

Our home

Let’s go back to January 2008. I happened to be looking for something in our newspaper when I came across an article about my now landlord. He had set up a program that gave mobile homes to low income people. The requirements were: no felony convictions, no drug or nasty child porn convictions and a minimum income of $1200 a month. I was intrigued; my future DH had just moved in with me, our lease was ending in 3 months and we were looking for a place that we could afford. Now I didn’t contact them immediately I had to think about it. I thought for 3 weeks and then decided to at least talk to the park management. My smarts and frugalness got the better of me and I turned in that application. We were accepted and March 13, 2008 we took over ownership of our new home. All we paid was the taxes for it - $68 and if you include the $50 “donation” for the application fee = $118 for a home we own free and clear.

Our home was built in 1965 – it’s the same age as I am, 55 feet long and 12 feet wide with 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, the kitchen and living room. When we moved in the furnace, hot water tank and plumbing were all new. They did not supply a stove or the refreigerator so we rented from Rent A Center. Over the next year we bought these appliances one from RAC the other from a private party.

We have what I think is a nice lot and a covered patio (really nice). We have an apple tree towards the back the apples aren’t the prettiest but when they are cleaned up they are real nice (and free). Because of the amount of sun we get the lot is real nice for a garden. Trust me coming out our backdoor and seeing the garden right next to the door is really nice.

While I love my home and won’t give it up I have one comment to make. HOME OWNERSHIP IS NOT FOR WIMPS!!!!

The view out the back of our lot.

Saving hints

My future DH went to Kroger today to pick up a few things. He brought home an interesting Catalina.

Buy any Fleischmannn''s yeast strip and get 50 cents off a future order OR buy a jar and get $1 off your next shopping trip. This is good until Nov 29, 2009. I bet that coupons will be out shortly to make this a really good deal.

Also on it they offer a 48 page cookbook.
Go to breadbreakthrough.com fill in information and select PRINTED CHECKOUT MESSAGE for how you discovered this offer.

And since I just found a website for baking bread in your crockpot I'll be buying some.

How I spent my day

Well thanks to some nice giving friends and family I was overrun with tomatoes. So I spent the afternoon chopping, coring, cooking and freezing tomatoes – including a bunch of globe size cherry tomatoes. I still have 2 or 3 more tomatoes growing and another person here in the park also has more growing so I most likely will be adding to the stash. Plus I still have green beans that are producing and the cabbage is still growing.

The total canning/freezing total for this year is:
7 half pints of tomatoes – canned
5 half pints of strawberry jam
5 half pints of pickled banana peppers
1 half pint of something I have no idea what it is
3 quart jars of cooked tomatoes with celery added – freezer
1 pint of tomato juice – will be the base for some vegetable soup
3 quart containers of chopped tomatoes – freezer
2 quarts of green beans (so far) – freezer

Worse yet, or better yet?, the apple tree has ripe fruit. See how Greg arranged some for me?
The apples will get peeled and cored. I think some will be made into apple pie filling and the rest will get either get canned or put in the freezer for use over the winter.

Earning extra money

Times are tough. Somehow I don't think that I need to mention that to nayone. One of the ways I earn extra money is to visit my point sites and earn them. Just today I requested a gift card from Home Depot thru Mypoints.com. Now I am not one to do a whole lot of online shopping so it takes me longer to earn the gift certificates jut for reading the email they send.

Another site to visit is Memolink.com. Just by visiting the site everyday you get the site of the day points, several surveys for points, videos of the day points. Memolink does take a bit longer to ern the awards but hey its easy enough. I do tend to doo more shopping thru Memolink such as Ebay I get points for any size purchase!!!

If your not a member of any of these sites please email me and I can send an invite. If you sign up thru my invite I do get credit and extra points.

Sad day and a change in plans

Today is a sad day in our house. One of my cats died last night. Chanel was the old lady of our house. The vet figured that she was about 14 years old and with her age and the severe flea infestation we have her body was overwhelmed. My remaining cat Simba is very sad and kind of mooping around.
I now have to figure out how to give him a bath to further remove his fleas. Oh joy!!!
We will also be doing another flea bombing this Saturday (we just did one this past saturday).
Well the cost of taking Chanel to the vet prohibits me from Giant Eagle shopping.

Planning for a shopping trip

One of my hobbies is coupon shopping. I started couponing in 1999 when I moved back home to Ohio and was unemployed. I have not stopped although there is only myself, my future DH Greg, the 2 cats and the bird. I used the goodies to help out others such as a monthly donation to the food pantry my church supports. Right now I am gathering a bunch of stuff (mouth items) to donate to a local organization that the church’s youth will be helping with.

This week I plan on making a trip to Giant Eagle (GE). I love GE they double $1.00 coupons (here most places just do 50 cents and lower) but they are bit of work to get to. I don’t’ drive so I take the local bus system for any shopping that I have to do. When I go to GE I need a ride home so I shop at the one by my dad’s and then he will take me home.

So far just looking at the ad I see:
Bic Multi purpose lighter BOGO which works out to $1.84 a piece - $1.00 manufacturer coupon that will double so free. GE does not usually give the overage on any double coupon so I don’t count on it.
Barilla Plus pasta 2/$4 - $1 off 2 manu coupon = 2/$2 not the best deal but I am out of pasta.
Hefty One zip bags 2/$3 - $1.00 manu coupons that will double so free bags. I’ve got 10 coupons but the most I will be able to use will be 4.
Ziploc containers 2/$5 – 55 cent coupons and $1.50/2 coupons
Fancy Feast Appetizers 10/$10 - $1.00/3 manu coupon. I’m not expecting this coupon to double since the food is $1 a piece.
Tidy Cat litter 20 lbs container 2/$13 - $1.00 manu coupon = $4.50 each (the real reason I need a ride home!!)
Kashi cereal 2/$6 – 1 coupon for a free box of Honey Sunshine plus $1.50/1 coupons PLUS when you spend $10 you get $2 off your next shopping order. What I plan on doing is buying 3 boxes of cereal ($9) and a Kashi bar ($1)
Grands biscuits 4/$5 – there is a $1 internet printed coupon = 25 cents each
Carefree liners 16 – 56 count $1.99 - $1.00 manu coupon = free
Kotex various products & sizes $4.99 - $1.00 coupons = $2.99
I imagine that there will be other Health & Beauty items but I need to check the prices and my coupons. A couple of things I can think to check are Sauve lotion ($1.00 manu coupon), pain killers (various $1.00 coupons), Sally Hansen nail tools ($1.00 coupons)
Some other coupons I at least have pulled are:
Velveeta mac & cheese cups BOGO
Hormel Compleats 75 cents off
Beech Nut stage 3 fruit free (will donate to the church pantry or even use it in my muffins and cakes)
Friskees party mix (cat treats) BOGO
Nestle coffee-mate stick packs BOGO
Kashi heart to Heart oatmeal $1 (may use for the above kashi deal)
Kashi Golean hot cereal $1.00 (ditto possible kashi deal)
:Lipton tea bags free bags up to $4.00

Actually the mobile home park we live in is between 2 cornfields.

Welcome to my world

Good morning, I wanted to create this blog so I can share my world with others. I like to read different blogs to find out about other people's world. I also needed an outlet for my writing (or some days lack of it) and for my photography. I love taking pictures but my family only wants to see so many of them.
